Last month we discussed the third hit of the Saturn-Uranus opposition which began last year and continues for most of 2010. Saturn opposing Uranus suggests a conflict or negotiation between young and old, tradition and progress, established values versus new ideals and ideas. The last time this opposition occurred was in the mid 1960s when a revolution powered by ideals of freedom changed the social fabric of the Western world. In the 1960s, Pluto was in Virgo and the casualty of the Saturn-Uranus opposition was ‘morality and values’. Hippies with long hair, smoking marijuana with bare breasts and flowery shirts and listening to loud music did little harm. The real threat was their refusal to conform to the old way of doing things. And now we have our youth doing exactly the same. So if you’re one of those people I hear complaining about Generation Y (born early eighties to late nineties) and their lack of respect, poor spelling, laziness, attitude problem and over-reliance on technology .... well you’d better get used to their new world order…. just as people had to get used to ‘free love’ in the 1960s!
So what sacred cows are under threat? With Pluto in Capricorn forming a backdrop to the Saturn-Uranus opposition, the clear target for meltdown is everything ruled by Capricorn. That means bricks and mortar, the economy, banks, money, governments, big business and any hierarchical or status-ridden structure. So if nonconformity is on the menu, we have the likelihood of Generation Y refusing to participate in the Capricorn dream. That means refusing to: buy houses; take out mortgages; obey or even have superiors; get degrees; participate in the superannuation and banking system or kow-tow to business and government rules and regulations. Refusing to work long hours, refusing to climb the corporate ladder and refusing to wait until they’re middle aged to run the show! Choosing environment over economy. Time over money. Relationships over work. Personal development over career success.
In case you haven’t noticed, we’re in the middle of a textual revolution – the sexual revolution was forty years ago! And the generation gap is widening daily. Anyone without 24 hour broadband, an iPhone and a copy of ‘The Four Hour Work Week’ will soon be left behind. Google, YouTube, Facebook and Twitter offer instant information and networking opportunities that no one could have dreamed of 20 years ago as the virtual world of Uranus in Pisces (Generation Y) collides with the practical and hardworking world of Saturn in Virgo (Baby Boomers and Generation X). So will there be anarchy? Probably no more so than in the 1960s, but things will definitely change. And is it so wrong to want to work less and enjoy more freedom?
